Meditation: The Most Important Thing For Us All

What is meditation?

Meditation means going within (from the latin word medi that means middle or center). We all are something beyond our physical bodies, beyond our feelings, our desires, our thoughts…there is something deeper within us. Meditation is about being with this deeper part of us.

Why should we meditate?

In our day to day life we go through many ups and downs, seeing and experiencing both negative and positive things in the world, in our lives…and getting affected by them all. This is a state of duality or illusion…where we fall out of balance, fearful and unaware of who we are. Negative energy, fears or blockages are a result of this imbalance or ignorance…manifesting as diseases, problems, harmful thoughts, negative attachments, destructive beliefs, disturbed behavior or unhappiness of various kinds. Through meditation we awaken to our inner truth and discover inner happiness. We know that there is nothing to fear at all. This brings peace and joy to all of us and puts us all back in a balanced and wholesome state making everything better.

Who can meditate?

Anyone can, there are no restrictions of gender and even children can meditate whenever they are ready for it.

When should we meditate?

Meditation is an inner state and not restricted by time. Whether it is morning or night, before food or after, is not so important, although keeping a light stomach helps some people in focusing better, and it helps to be not too sleepy when you are trying to meditate. Women in their periods, or people who are not feeling well can meditate as well. In-fact meditation could help in healing you during uncomfortable times. With practice meditation will become easier and effortlessly possible at any time.

What should be worn?

There is no need to wear any special type of outfit. As long as you are comfortable you can meditate whether at work or home in your day to day clothes.

Are there any specific methods of meditation?

It does not matter what technique you use to draw focus from outer world to the inner self….some people begin by closing their eyes and sitting still, some prefer listening to soothing music to relax their mind, some focus on chanting or mantras, some focus on their breath, all these are just aids or induction techniques to gradually achieve stillness. Yet these are not meditation itself. Meditation is when we go beyond all this and be without any thoughts to discover the innermost self.

What are the steps to follow?

Step 1. Relaxed awareness: In day to day life sometimes we get absorbed in the experiences without remembering our innermost self. The first step in meditation is to draw our senses inwards. You can try this by closing your eyes gently and sitting in a comfortable posture, neither slouching not stiff.

Step 2: Observation: Instead of getting attached to any feelings, thoughts or mind-chatter, just observe them and watch them quieten. Observing something gives you power over it. Observe your breath and your mind… and watch the space between your thoughts.

Step 3: Witnessing: When you find the space between your thoughts …when there is inner silence, then you can observe your true self. This is who you really are. Be with yourself as a witness to the self. This takes you beyond the illusion of the world process and in alignment with your inner truth which is pure peace and bliss.

For how long should we meditate?

You can meditate for as long as you want. You might take some time in the beginning to even reach a meditative state and the idea is that once you get there you must stay in it for as long as possible. You can begin with practicing for 30 minutes a day and slowly increase it to one hour a day. As you practice each day after a period of dedicated practice, you will find that the meditative state will come naturally to you and in every part of the day and even at night while sleeping you will be in a deep inner state. Still it will be good to dedicate at least one hour a day for specially being just with yourself and meditating.

What will happen once you reach a meditative state?

For each person their own individual and unique experiences are important. You can note and observe our own experiences. For example: Being one with nature, Being one with the universe, Feeling light, Just being, Pure peace and bliss…these are some of the common experiences of people who meditate. After you achieve this ‘enlightened’ state you will not feel superior in any way but will be more compassionate and humble, recognizing that all is one.

Your 2016 in Runes

Runes are an ancient alphabet with spiritual symbols, used both in divination and spells. In this reading for the year for you, I have used the popular Futhark runes for a simple message and an easy spell for each one of the zodiac signs.

ariesARIES mannaz Mannaz

The rune Mannaz is a sign representing humanity or mankind. For 2016 its message for Aries is to connect with others, reach out and build relationships. You will find more meaning and purpose in the way you help others. You will be at more and more peace with the universe as the year goes by. New connections will be formed and old will be strengthed. Society, family and community all will be a greater support to you.

Draw the symbol of this rune and keep it upright in a picture album with photos of your family, friends and people you care about to keep the bonds strong.

taurusTAURUSlaguz revLaguz Reversed

The rune laguz is a symbol of depth and hidden powers. When reversed it symbolises a year when you are to emerge into the surface, be out there in the forefront and let the world know you. You will find much more success in conventional and practical work where you directly interact with the outer world, rather than staying in a shell. This is no year to keep your relationship or career moves a secret. Make things official.

To balance the inner and outer world, keep the laguz rune under your pillow to help you deepen your spiritual insights through dreams.

gemGEMINI eiwazEihwaz

Eihwaz is considered the rune of resurrection. This year you are back and making a whole new start. If you had abandoned a dream or stopped yourself from hoping, look up again as you have another chance now. Your hidden and past life talents will be reused again in your life. A dark phase is over and a brighter one might take its place provided you stay optmistic. Rest assured you are going to be more powerful than you thought you were.

Write any unfulfilled wishes or intentions on a piece of paper and draw this rune on it to allow them another chance of manifesting.

cancerCANCER othalo Othala

The Othala rune is a sign of wealth, property or home. You might receive inheritence or a generosity from ancestors. Or perhaps a property investment will lead to more wealth. This rune also shows that 2016 is  good year for your family and for being surrounded by people who love you. You will be firmly established in your roots, grounded and secure. Yet, you will feel safe to grow steadily as per your plans.

Draw this symbol on an image of your dream home to increase your chances of acquiring it.

leoLEO ansuz Ansuz

The rune Ansuz is a symbol of divine intervention. You are receiving a lot of heavenly blessings this year. Most of your problems are being sorted through the higher force. You are also receiving much success and abundance from the universe through your faith in your inner self. Meditation and inner work will go a long way to attune you with the higher powers that be. Be open and receptive as a lot of good is coming your way.

Keep this rune close to you for connecting with the higher guides and masters and allowing their guidance at all times.

virgoVIRGO kenazrev Kenaz reversed

Kenaz is a rune that represents awareness and light. Its reversal indicates that you might feel more solitary this year, withdrawn and self focused. You will be more interested in inner than outer knowledge. You might feel like distancing yourself from things that no longer enrich you, such as negative news or meaningless entertainment. While others might find you secretive you know you have nothing to hide except what you must.

Write your most personal goals and secrets on paper and lock them in a box with the Kenaz reversed on top to prevent the wrong eyes from seeing them.

The rune Thurisaz means thorn which makes it a sign that problems or obstacles will be met with positivity. You shall find that your intuition is guiding you to understand what is in your way, whether outer or inner obstacles are on your path. Also remember that there are inner reasons for all outer issues, and cleanse your chakras and aura more often this year to keep all the good coming into your life.

Draw this rune on a paper on which are written all the challenges you are facing, then burn it in a black candle to visualise that all obstacles have been banished away.

scorpioSCORPIO wyrd Wyrd

The blank rune or Wyrd is a symbol of the unexpected. Its pure magick when anything and everything can happen this year. You have the power and its upto you how to apply it. If you are wise you will use this opportunity to enhance peace and prosperity, love and light. Unwise and you might end up hurting yourself or others. This is the year when you realize its better to be careful what you wish for, for it will come true.

Take a blank paper and meditate, then write a story of this year for you making it as positive as possible, as if all those things have happened already.

saggiSAGITTARIUS berkano Berkano

The rune Berkano is a symbol of nourishment, representing the mother goddess and her love. You will find that this year you develop a better relationship with the feminine side of yourself and with your female relatives, friends and partners. You will be helped and supported by others most of this year. Its time to nourish and care for yourself. Love and kindness will be shared generously, be receptive.

Place this runic symbol on your altar or spiritual area for connecting with the divine feminine this year.

capriCAPRICORN yeraJera

The Jera rune represents the fulfillment of a rewarding year, and promises that you will be receive the result of all you have put in in the previous years. Its a time to be grateful and to be generous with yourself. You might feel lucky and unaware of how you came to deserve all that you receive this year. However karma works in mysterious ways and it is always in balance. The good you did is returning your way so be unafraid to do more good.

Place this runic symbol on your financial documents to reap rich rewards and returns this year.

aquariusAQUARIUS wunjomerk Wunjo merkstave

The rune Wunjo is a sign of joy and happiness, yet its merkstave or dark aspect is a warning not to be too selfish or self-centered. You are surely having a lot of good in your life and the more grateful you are for it the better it is going to be this year. Stay away from excesses of any kind. Overindulgence in anything can be bad. Get rid of any negative habits or addictions and care for yourself and others. This year will surely be a good year for shadow work and self improvement if you focus so.

pisces PISCES nauthizNauthiz reversed

The Nauthiz rune is a symbol of necessity or hardships and when reversed it is a sign that the worst is behind you. You are having this year a chance of letting go of everything that was dysfunctional and getting rid of all fears. You wil start making progress ahead of all hurdles. You can cancel out or negate all negativity this year and be more dynamic and progressive once you are through with reversing the challenges.

Write all the problems or obstacles on a piece of paper with black ink and draw a large nauthiz reversed on it to indicate that you have blocked or cancelled their effect.

Hope you enjoy the magick of your runes this year!

Blessed 2016.

Your 2016 Magickal Tarot Forecast

Tarot is a magickal tool – it tells you not the future which is set in stone, but the future that YOU are creating RIGHT NOW!

Here is your magickal tarot forecast for 2016 using Tarot, drawing a card each at random through intuition for each zodiac sign.

NOTE: Although normally I prefer Vedic astrology, you can this time follow your western zodiac sun-sign, the popular one followed by most people, to read this forecast, as I am keeping it simple for the general public for now.

ABOUT THE TAROT DECK USED FOR THIS FEATURE: I have used my own Harry Potter Tarot that I have designed based on the movies…its an unofficial non-commercial version of the deck used only by me for personal readings and created for fun – you cannot find this deck anywhere for sale but you can take a little look at these 87 cards (23 major cards and 16×4 suits of minors) if you pay me a visit. Until then enjoy some of it here!

Now, are you ready for your zodiac message for 2016? ….Here we go:

About the card: The mirror of Erised (desire) as the Six of Goblets card reflects to us whatever we want most deep within. As Harry looks into it he sees his late mom and dad.

What it means to you: The 6 of cups is all about nostalgia, memories of the past, wishes you had that remained unfulfilled until now…dreams, hopes and desires…This is the year you revist them all. Its a good year for healing your inner self, particularly through past life regression. Pay attention to your dreams and you might be transported into past memories where deep healing and realizations take place. Its also a good year to patch up, re-connect with and reach out to long lost friends and family members, including deceased ancestors. They may have loving messages for you. Rebuild, revisit and remember..healing is ‘returning to your inner self’! Meditate holding the Rhodonite stone and visualise yourself meeting people and healing memories from your past for peace and healing.

What it means to you: Feel blessed, this year you are divinely guided in the best possible way. This card will manifest as wonderful teachers, supporters and guides on your path. These could be people as well as beings of nature, whether spirits, faery guides, trees or power animals. Keep your ego aside and try to learn in as humbly as possible from these masters. You might also gain more prominence as a master and guide yourself. This card may also bring more stability and committment in relationships both at work and in personal life, including marriage and committed romance. You are wonderfully and magickally supported! Expand your energy field by visualising a bright light shining from within and spreading all around. If you keep believing in the positive soon all dark forces will be warded off and you will have the space to focus on your most important goals with a mind as free and light as possible. What it means to you: This year you might feel like taking a break, slowing down or taking some healing. If the previous year was stressfull, it may be a good idea to allow yourself to recuperate and gather energy instead of spreading yourself too thin. Conserve and consolidate, awaiting for new beginnings when the time is right. Yet stay protected and shielded away from any negativity. You have something with you which is very powerful. Try using dreamcathers as you sleep, or a sword or athame under your matress, to protect from unwanted energies, for instance.

A creative, right-brained approach is likely to solve most problems and increase your success levels. Write your thoughts, dreams and visions down, for they might just come true. Get in touch with your emotions and follow your hunch. Sometimes its great to be in balance whenever you go overboard in your psychic world. Try to get systematic with learning divination, with runes, crystal balls, I-Ching, Tarot – be creative and yet remember that everything is changeable.

About the card: Salazar Slytherin, the powerful co-founder of Hogwarts who later went his own way over differences concerning the policy of allowing muggle borns entry into Hogwarts is an imposing and feared figure.

Sometimes slightly unapproachable you will be very dedicated to your beliefs and visions. You might feel like you are all-powerful and cannot be wronged or righted by anyone, yet you are called to think not-only for yourself but also of the higher good. What it means to you: This is a good year to celebrate, enjoy and cherish good moments. Be social and invite many loved ones to be a part of your life right now. You are likely to attain success in most of the things you have decided upon, whether you goal be marriage, a new project, or a new property. Its time to let your hair down and indulge a little bit after all that hard work you did last year. Light a special candle for marriage or one for success, depending on your goal and visualise yourself celebrating it already.

About the card: Harry’s loan to the Weasley twins has not been in vain as the twins not only establish a successful shop but also return the favour to Harry in good time.

What it means to you: This is the year to share and collaborate for most of you. You will be fair in your dealings, both in giving and receiving. This is the year when karma is balanced quite well, to your satisfaction. The more you will give the more you will get in return, so be generous. You will be level headed with money and will invest in the right avenues. Your decisions are heartfelt and based on kindness. Donating to charitable causes, both in cash and kind, can be sometimes as rewarding as investing in a business, so pay it forward and the universe will keep the balance going.

About the card: The Dark Mark in the sky is a sign of the Death Eaters, who are the dark army of Voldemort. Professor Quirrel who was to teach defense against the dark arts was mind-controlled by the dark lord from the back of his head.

What it means to you: This may be the year for materialism for many of you and this is fine only as long as you do not let it control your mind. Bewarefor instance of advertising that creates false demands for things unnecessary and unuseful. Stay away from negative information and things, no matter how tempting it is to click or pick. Be fearless and destroy any negativity that might be in your life through banishing spells. Light black candles and send all that negativity into the black hole of transformation.

About the card: The figure of death is here and so are the three deathly hallows, the symbols of immortality being the circle for the resurrection stone, the line for the elder wand and the triangle for the invisibility cloak.

What it means to you: Death is a card of change and transition. It is a passage from one phase to another, when lessons are learnt, you say goodbye to what has passed and prepare yourself for new beginnings. This year will be a major year for detaching from anything that was not working well in your life, whether an obsolete project or a restrictive partnership. Remember that you have an immortal and limitless soul that is not bound by any attachments, and be true to your inner self. Meditate and visualise that you are cutting the cords connecting to you from any unwanted sources and set yourself free.

In short, there is always something positive in every card that life deals out to you. Try to see it that way, and that is what you will manifest.

I hope you enjoyed the messages from this rare Harry Potter tarot!

Spiritual, Religious, Magickal, Witch, Pagan, Wiccan…. What’s the Difference

wiccan spirituality.jpg

In recent days there has been a trend of people stating they are ‘spiritual and not religious’, wrongly assuming that ‘spirituality’ and ‘religion’ are necessarily opposite terms.

It is also observed that the words ‘magick’ and ‘witchcraft’ are being commonly used to refer to what people call ‘occult practices’ with the word occult meaning obscure or hidden, even though these are in reality spiritual practices and are no longer secretive in today’s world.

It is also quite often that I have heard people speak of Wicca and witchcraft interchangeably while the fact is that there is a difference between the two.

To add to the confusion, in the western world the word ‘paganism’ is often used by many people, especially witches, as their religion, while in truth paganism is a broad group of several spiritual traditions or religions and not any one specific religion.

This is a detailed article explaining my views on each of these things.

Let me begin with the word ‘spirituality’. This is a word we all use commonly but few know how to actually define.

Spirituality is the belief that subtle energy called ‘spirit’ is found in the world governing everything and everyone. If you are a ‘spiritual’ person, this means that you believe there is an unseen ‘force’ or energy that underlies all physical or material things and beings in the universe.

Atheists would be people who do not believe in spirituality or any spiritual power. Most atheists are materialists who believe only in the visible or physical world as a mechanical construct with no spirit or invisible energy in it. They regard themselves as ‘rationalists’ and according to them believing in spiritual energy is superstition or unscientific belief. According to them science is strictly limited to what is observable only through the limited five senses of human beings.

Religion on the other hand is groups of people believing in some sort of divine power or spiritual power (theism), some call it The God (monotheism), some believe in many gods and goddesses (polytheism) and therefore you can say that religion is a term used for many diverse spiritual beliefs. Any spiritual belief can be termed as religion if there are many people who share that belief.

Those people who are put-off by the word ‘religion’ after seeing examples of fundamentalism and religious politics, and therefore jump to the conclusion that spirituality is something ‘better’ than religion must remember one thing…. Religion is not a term that is exclusively used for conversion based faiths, for narrow minded beliefs, for rigid rites and rituals, or for divisive beliefs that ask you to belong to either one faith or the other but not both. There are many religions in the world that are open-minded, spiritually liberating and flexible, and you can believe and choose one or many religious faiths or beliefs accordingly. So when you use the word religion kindly do not restrict your imagination to just Christianity, Islam, Hinduism, Buddhism, Judaism and other popular faiths. Just about any spiritual beliefs that gain popularity can become religion and these can be countless and variable. As masses awaken to the spiritual truth, even spirituality becomes more or less a religion.

Magick is a term that simply means spiritual power. To be spiritual is therefore to believe that there is magick in everything. While spirituality is the belief in magick, magick is the power which spirituality is based on. The letter ‘k’ distinguishes the word ‘magick’ from the word ‘magic’ which is sometimes used to refer to staged tricks or illusions. Magick is most often used to refer to the conscious application of magickal power such as spells. However magickal power is constantly flowing all around us, unknown or known to us.

And before you say – ‘I don’t believe in all these things’….let me remind you that almost everyone in the world, including anyone who is an ‘atheist’, not only believes in but also practices magick. And that too almost every single day! When we wish each other ‘good-morning’, ‘good-luck’ or ‘bless you’ for example….when you cut your birthday cake…or when you ‘‘touch wood’. Rings a bell?

If you make a wish, pray for something, believe that you can make something happen with the power of your mind or through a mysterious force… then you are indulging in an act of magick. All spiritual beliefs and religions are therefore based on magick, not just witchcraft, paganism or Wicca (described below).

Witchcraft is a practice based on applying spiritual energy or in other words magickal power with wisdom. The words ‘wit’ referring to mind-power and the word ‘wiz’ referring to wisdom are linked with the words witch and wizard respectively (practitioners of the ‘craft’). Therefore witchcraft means ‘crafting your life with wisdom’. You can also call this ‘spiritual healing’ as it is a positive application of spiritual power or magick. Today most witches or wizards use the word ‘spiritual healer’ instead, because the word witchcraft has been tarnished due to centuries of negative prejudice spread throughout the world. Remove the false stigma and you will find the true meaning of witchcraft. Today many healers are proud to say that they are witches.

Witchcraft is a multicultural or global practice. Wise men and women of pagan or native cultures all over the ancient world were witches, also called shamans, medicine men or women, or spiritual healers in various languages.

Paganism is a word for ancient spirituality and is used to refer to several ancient or native spiritual beliefs and practices such as natural folk-medicine or belief in divinity of nature, or the elements of nature in various cultures all over the world. These include ancient religions such as the Native Chinese, Native African, Native American, Aboriginal, ancient Hindu or Vedic faith, Celtic Druidry, Nordic Asatru or Heathenry, Egyptian Kemitism and so on.

These pagan belief systems developed naturally in each area of earth, and are NOT usually based on conversion, or on following any central organisation or personality or adherence to the words of any specific book.

There are some continuing pagan traditions such as the Vedic or Hindu faith of India which is deeply spiritual as well as religious and have been there for thousands of years from before the dawn of conversion based religions. Many of these ancient beliefs, especially in the western world, have been replaced by conversion based religions that came much later – religions such as Christianity or Islam for instance.

As an increasing number of people today are ‘reverting’ to the old or ancient spiritual beliefs, especially global paganism based on nature worship and pan-theism (belief in divinity in everything) today most of the pagan faiths are being reborn or reconstructed as neo-paganism.

Wicca is one such new spirituality that unites its believers under a common guideline called the Wiccan Rede that states, ‘An Ye Harm None Do As Ye Will’. In simple terms this means ‘exercising our will power as long as it harms none’. Wicca is not another name for general occult practices or a wide range of ritualistic or pagan ceremonies. It is an ethically conscious spiritual belief system that guides us to be kind to nature and ourselves.

The difference between Wicca and witchcraft is that while witchcraft is a practice, Wicca is a belief system centred on the Wiccan Rede. Many witches choose to believe in Wicca as a faith to integrate their practices into, yet not all witches call themselves Wiccan.

Just like other religions that have elaborate rituals and ceremonies such as wedding rites, funerals and worship, Wicca too has plenty of rituals. The difference is that Wiccans believe that the deity or higher power being invoked is not an outer God that rules over nature, but nature or the universe itself in its many forms and can be referred to by any name of any god or goddess of the globe. Wicca therefore appeals to the modern spiritualist who prefers to be open-minded and nature loving in their practices.

There is no central governing body or authority figure in Wicca as it is modelled around paganism. Similarly there is no conversion to become Wiccan – you can simply choose your faith through inner belief. Some Wiccans also study and get initiated to be professional witches or healers by learning through a specific Wiccan tradition or teacher. Initiation as a witch or priest/ess in Wicca is not mandatory or a pre-requisite of being Wiccan, but is all about learning spiritual skills and gaining mastery. It is often done ceremonially, just like being initiated into the spiritual healing system or priesthood of any other pagan or native belief.

Wicca is primarily scientific as well as spiritual in its worship as Wiccans believe in celebrating our earth’s seasonal changes and cycles through rituals. Wiccans believe in an inner natural guidance or intuition taking nature as the teacher, instead of following any one personality or pre-set beliefs. In short Wicca is a spirituality that believes in being harmless, loving earth and celebrating the divine in all of nature while keeping an open mind. It unites us all as children of nature…. beings of one earth.

The Goddess Guru and The Full Blue Moon of Lughnasad

The full moon is Blue –  13 full moons this year and in July itself two!

It is called the Blue moon not because the moon turns blue in color literally, but because the event is rare as it happens once in 2.7 years or so.

The Goddess and the moon have been connected since eternity. The moon is a sign of our inner light that shines through the darkness of the night. The waning and waxing phases of the moon indicate the ‘maya’ process or illusion that we all get entangled in from time to time and the ups and downs that make life interesting. The full moon is a symbol of our complete realization and our full awareness of ‘who we truly are’ beyond the rise and fall of our mental tides.

The number 13 is a symbol of the lunar year which should have 13 moons ideally. No way is the number 13 unlucky. It has always been connected with the Goddess energy and this is why it was tarnished along with witchcraft, nature worship, the black cat and many other symbols that are truly harmless.

This time the Blue Moon is a Guru purnima – time to honor the Guru.

But who is the Guru?

is the guru someone or something other than you?

Who is the Goddess?

Is she a woman, a person or the Self?

Can the Goddess be our Guru?

This Full Moon is in Capricorn and its the harvest time – a celebration of our grain and corn. This festival has been called Lammas or loaf-mass as well as Lughnasad a time to honor the light or Lugh. As the Sun is opposite the moon and the Moon is illuminated fully this harvest, the God and Goddess are uniting, our consciousness rises and illuminates the darkest corners of our mind.

It is a time to thank the Goddess, nature who is providing us constantly. Feeding our endless needs in this multidimensional reality that is Self created. The Goddess or nature is everywhere, and everything as a reflection of our inner Self.

Capricorn is a practical sign and this full moon in Capricorn is a symbol of our needs fulfilled. It grounds us and brings us closer to earth as an extension of our inner self. As we reap the harvest let us remember that we reap as we sow and as we nourish. What we feeds becomes stronger. We have choices and they create our life.

Nature is the real teacher, the real guru. It is through life that we learn. The Guru is within and all our life is created from within. What better time than this to remember who we are than this time – here and now!

To me this time period is a reflection on my needs – a realization that I do not need as much as I thought I did until now. As I thank the Goddess this time, I feel her within me and I know I am the provider. I have enough and I feel full – that is full moon this time to me.

I am full, I have enough. My needs are all fulfilled.

Join me in this energy and converge.

This is the time!

To know me just know who you are

To join me find your inner power

To follow me be your own star

To love me end your inner war

For you are just a friend of mine

You and I are one divine

We’ve just got to

Heal the world a little more

Heal ourselves a little more

Believe in ourselves just a little more

Listen to ourselves just a little more

Its easy and no other way

This is a game to fairly play

We create each night and day

With what we think, feel, do and say

And you are just a dream of mine

I know you’re going to be just fine

As I now

Be at peace a little more

The whole world heals a little more

Awaken now just a little more

Return to me just a little more

For the world is just a dream of mine

And I know that we are one divine!

Beware of Spiritual Couching!

A few years ago someone I knew was promoting himself as a spiritual coach. Inadvertently the word that he typed on his profile was ‘spiritual couching’ instead of spiritual coaching. Its funny how these ‘Freudian slips’ can be very revealing. Something deep from our unconscious knows how to communicate and express itself through meaningful coincidences even through mistypes and miscommunication.

Yes, we all need to reflect on this – all thanks to my acquaintance who made this slip and taught us a valuable lesson. Are we in the danger of becoming ‘spiritual couches’ who are passive livers than active spiritualists? Do we misunderstand and misinterpret much of our ‘spiritual’ new age gurus’ teachings are many of these teachings true in the first place? Read on to know what all ‘is’ and is not being spiritual in this ‘new age’ world.

Myth: Being Effortless = Being Lazy.

Truth: Relax, receive and effortlessly attract, these new age principles do not mean we should be ‘couch potatoes’ just sitting and waiting for the apple to drop right into our mouth. Yes we receive the fruits of our karma effortlessly when the time is ‘ripe’ but hey – don’t forget to sow the seeds and water them. When the fruit is ripe it will fall down on its own, for sure. But go and prepare your soil first, get your tools out, dig and delve, sow and grow, nourish, be patient – it takes effort. Some karma is required for us so invest into your life and surely the returns will flow back to you. All the ‘effortless’ things you have received in the present life are your past life fruits ripening up now. Being ready to receive has helped. New age spirituality helps you be more ‘ready’ and receive your fruits, but do not mistake this receptivity state for being lazy and dull.

Myth: The Universe is Within = We should be self centered/ selfish.

Truth: The definition of within needs to change. Who are you? Know thyself. The Universe is within means expand your consciousness – you are not just your limited lower self, your body, your material possessions, your limited mind. Make your mind more unlimited and see how everything in the universe is part of your Self. The universe is within this greater ‘Self’ not in your narrow and contrived notions of your selfishness. To be selfish is to love only your limited self or your lower self. To be self loving is quite a different approach. It means to love everything and everyone including yourself. It means being aware that love is not something very limited that can be either given to yourself or to others, but an endless energy flowing to all in ever increasing amounts. Be generous and expand yourself- reach out and love everything and everyone as part of you.

Myth: The Secret and Law of Attraction = Pursue Material Goals All The Time

Truth: So you have read all these new age books and they seem to tell you that the universe exists to serve your lower needs of food, sex, shopping, diamonds, fashion and beauty? Just tell me one thing. Do you ever meditate and is there any substitute to your inner peace? Can any amount of food, sex, glamour and money buy you peace? No, you do not exist merely to accumulate and gather material comforts. Having money and things is simply not a state of true abundance. Being spiritual is all about being aware of your spirit nature, your real self, at all times. There will actually come a point when you will no longer ‘hunger’ for anything, ‘crave’ for anything, be ‘needy’ for anything. Being content is possible – make that you.

Myth: Being Positive = Thinking Positive (Doing good is secondary)

Truth: There is so much hype created around positive thinking that the worst of criminals have been projecting themselves as spiritual people. Some ‘spiritual’ people actually believed that they could get away with anything and everything by just thinking positive and imagining all kind of good things happening to them right now even while indulging in negative activities on the side. The truth is you simply cannot delete or cancel out your negativity just through superficial thoughts. Being positive right now is a great thing and this includes positive actions. You need to transform all over – mind, body and soul. You need to start doing only positive things else it will be very difficult for your inner or unconscious mind to believe that you are a good person and you deserve good. Our unconscious mind is way beyond our conscious thoughts and affirmations. We have to change the way we live into something phenomenally positive in order to be truly positive.

Myth: Joy and Bliss = Drunkenness

Truth: Being in a state of spiritual bliss is very different from the ‘trance’ you induce through drunken dancing, substance abuse and lewd sexual performances. ‘New-agers’ reveling in pagan rituals that focus on excessive enjoyment do feel great for the short run but the effects wear off. A real ritual should empower you and shift your consciousness so deeply that you never need any drugs, alcohol and sexuality to stimulate yourself ‘spiritually’. Real paganism is about being in tune with nature through our inner meditative state, not just an external but an inner connection that is expressed outwards in such beautiful ways that even a child can feel safe in your rituals. Truly children require no drugs to dance, play and be merry – so why should we? Be in tune with you inner child and give yourself only those things you know are good for the child within. Be in a natural state of deep inner bliss.
